Professions are available for players to join which give extra benefits or skills. As long as you meet level and profession level requirements and have profession slots available, you can join any profession you wish. You may leave a profession at any time and immediately replace it (even if, for some reason, you don't otherwise meet level/profession level requirements) as long as you don't log out. Aside from losing progress in that profession, there is no penalty for leaving.
Professions are divided into three tiers: minor, specialization, and and major. Minor professions generally provide benefits which are are helpful across the board and activate without intervention. Specializations are generally aimed a specific situations such as doing a specific damage type or fighting a certain kind of mob. Major professions are full-blown powers which can provide significant advantages.
Minor professions and specializations typically activate randomly in combat if certain conditions are met. You will gain profession XP (PXP) whenever they activate. Major professions are activated manually and you will gain PXP when they are used. Major profession are typically limited by charges which regenerate over time.
To join, leave, or simply learn about professions, go to the Office of Professional Registration in Pinnacle (s,w,2s,2w

Profession Slots[]
As you advance, you will gain additional profession slots. You will not be able to start a new profession unless all current professions are level 35. The exception to this is if you leave a profession, you will always be able to refill that slot as long as you do so before you log out.
